To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first scenic highway in the United States, the Troutdale Historical Society and the City of Troutdale commissioned this monument to be placed in Troutdale’s Visionary Park.

The monument depicts two men Samuel Lancaster and Sam Hill as they contemplate the task of building a scenic highway through the difficult terrain of the Columbia River Gorge.

These two men devoted their expertise, time and talents to building this magnificent highway. Their goal to enhance the beauty of the Gorge and to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy its beauty.
